Get Carter! Big Ben nears return

19/03/2024

Boss Dai Flanagan has revealed that Wales international second row Ben Carter is set to hand Dragons a fitness boost ahead of the BKT United Rugby Championship clash with Vodacom Bulls.

Carter has been out of action since the derby victory over Ospreys at Rodney Parade in November with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old – who has made 51 appearances for the Men of Gwent – has missed several months of action for the Men of Gwent and the Six Nations with Wales.

But Flanagan revealed Carter had now returned to full training and was pushing for a Rodney Parade return in the upcoming games with the Bulls on Saturday (kick-off 7.35pm) and Zebre Parma on March 29.

“Ben is back up for selection,” said Flanagan. “He has put on six kilograms of lean muscle, so he is a massive human now. You’ll see the difference come the weekend.

“He is all work-rate and has the work of two men wherever he plays. That is his X-factor.

“I’m sure we’ll see a lot more collisions off him with the lean muscle mass he has got.

“Ben is one of the most diligent professionals you will ever meet so he has worked his tail off.

“He has been on a big block to improve his high intensity reps and with that he has put some weight on. We can’t wait to see him go.

“His injury has been seen as an opportunity, not a negative. But it can only be that if the player buys in and maximises the time he has got. Ben has done just that.”
