BHM2023: Rio Dyer

30/10/2023

Life in the fast lane. Rio Dyer only made his debut for Dragons five years ago, but already the wing wonder has become one of the most exciting talents in the Welsh game.

An eye-catching first Rugby World Cup in France – where he made five appearances for Warren Gatland’s men – has cemented Dyer’s place as one to watch in world rugby.

A product of the Dragons Academy, Dyer has represented Wales Under-20s and featured in the same squad as the likes of current Wales captain Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, Tommy Reffell and Sam Costelow in the 2019 Under-20 World Championship.

The Newport-born back made his debut for Dragons in January 2018 against Saracens in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and his league debut less than a month later against Benetton Rugby.

Dyer’s breakthrough campaign wsa during the 2021/2022 season when he made fifteen appearances for Dragons, scoring three tries.

The flyer built on that and his most productive season to date came in the 2022/2023 season, making fifteen appearances and scoring seven tries.

He would finish as the club's top try scorer that season which earnt him a Wales call-up and he was named Dragons Players' Player of the Season.

The Dragons speedster was one of five uncapped players named in the Wales squad for the 2022 autumn campaign.

He scored on debut for Wales against New Zealand in the opening game of the 2022 Autumn Nations Series in Cardiff and followed that up with another score against Australia at the Principality Stadium.

Dyer continued his fine form for Dragons which earned him another call up for the 2023 Six Nations Championship, starring for his country as he scored tries in the victory over Italy in Rome and the final score against France in Paris.

The 23-year-old was named in Warren Gatland's World Cup squad ahead of the 2023 competition and played five games in France – and currently has four tries in 14 games for his country.

Dyer will return to Dragons in the coming week after the Wales fixture with Barbarians. He returns with the rugby world eager to watch his progress continue.
