BHM2023: Nathan Brew

23/10/2023

The Brew brothers - Nathan and Aled – were star names at Rodney Parade with elder brother Nathan the first to shine for Dragons RFC.

Cardiff-born Nathan started his professional rugby career at Newport RFC, signing for the Black and Ambers when he was still only 19. He made his debut against Edinburgh and scored a first try for the club in a WRU Challenge Cup match against Bonymaen RFC.

Nathan made the move to Dragons when regional rugby was introduced to Wales in 2003 and his debut was against Scarlets. He made 25 appearances in all competitions in his first season, scoring three tries along the way.

The 2004/05 season saw Brew make 17 appearances, scoring two tries, before a groin injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Brew returned to the Dragons side just before Christmas in 2005 and scored four tries in 12 appearances, earning himself a late call-up to the Welsh squad for their tour of Argentina.

After being deployed mainly on the wing for most of his Dragons career, Brew moved to centre for the 2006/07 season where his natural ability to create space helped him score five tries that season, as well as landing a memorable drop goal in an EDF Energy Cup game at Northampton Saints.

Brew would leave Dragons in 2007 and make the move to Scarlets – a move that came as a shock to many supporters at Rodney Parade such was his standing with the fan base – before he then switched to Bristol at the end of 2008.

Nathan would make an emotional return to Rodney Parade in August 2010 when he re-joined Dragons on a one-year deal. He would make three more appearances that season to finish on 75 for the club, with 14 tries.

A former Wales Under-19 and Under-21 international, Brew’s solo Wales cap came against Romania at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham in August 2003.

He was part of two Welsh tours, the first in 2004 to South Africa and the second when he was selected for the tour to Argentina, where he was selection on the bench for the second Test.
