Dragons Wheelchair make unbeaten start

19/06/2023

The Dragons Wheelchair team made an impressive start to the WR5s League in Stoke Mandeville as they swept the board with a perfect record at the WR5s tournament - Wheelchair Rugby 5s.

Dragons were the standout team in the opening half round of fixtures in the newly formed Group A League Two as they won five out of five at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury.

Dragons defeated Harlequins 13-7 and then blitzed Taunton Gladiators 18-5. A tight affair saw Dragons edge out highly-rated Norfolk Knights 10-8 before another emphatic 16-3 win over Brighton Buccaneers. The final result saw Dragons storm Northampton Wanderers 14-5 to top the table with 15 points, ahead of second placed Norfolk.

The WR5s Tournament is this year split into four leagues over two days of competition. The Premiership sees the return of reigning WR5s champions Northampton Saints while the Championship sees Berkshire Banshees look for promotion after missing out last year in the final game.

League One is an exciting prospect with a mix of experienced and new teams. Any team could win promotion while new for the 2023 season is a fourth league. This league sees the return of Norfolk Knights as well as new teams, Harlequins, Northampton Wanderers and Tauton Gladiators alongside Dragons.
