Williams: We must nail key moments

30/01/2023

Rhodri Williams has acknowledged Dragons must start nailing key moments in games to secure better results - as attention now turns to the final fixtures in the BKT United Rugby Championship and EPCR Challenge Cup knockout rounds.

Williams grabbed a first half try as the Men of Gwent were defeated 42-28 by Glasgow Warriors in Round 13 last weekend at Rodney Parade.

The scrum half paid tribute to the way Glasgow turned the screw to claim victory after a flying start.

But the 29-year-old – now on 91 appearances for Dragons – believes Dragons must learn to grasp the key moments in games to turn positive performances into victories.

“Credit to Glasgow, they were clinical,” admitted Williams. “That first ten minutes they put 14 points on the board, and we had a bit of mountain to climb.

“We did well to get back into it, it was game on, but they finished the job. They are a quality team.

“In general, it has been a decent block for us, but results have not gone our way - we know that. We need to turn good performances into results.

“There were elements of that game that were good - but we are our own worst enemy at times.

“It’s small moments in the game,” he added. “We’ve been saying it for a long time, but we’re not miles off, a lot of those results could have gone the other way.

“It comes down to key moments and we’ve got to deal with those moments and start flipping results.”

Dragons now have a break from action before returning to league hostilities when they travel to undefeated leaders Leinster on Saturday, February 18.

And Williams believes the spell away from action can be of huge benefit with a huge amount of work now set for the training field.

“It gives us time to rest and recover from a tough 10-week block and take our learning from that block and start again on the field. Bring the basics back into the game,” he stated.

“This spell gives us time to strip our game back, look where things are going wrong and hopefully learn from them going into the next block. It’s an exciting next block to go in to.”
