13/01/2023

Head Coach Dai Flanagan praised a composed performance in France as Dragons RFC took a step towards knockout rugby by defeating Section Paloise 21-15 in Round 3.

Ashton Hewitt and Max Clark grabbed tries and Will Reed and JJ Hanrahan added points off the tee as the Men of Gwent soared up the Pool B standings.

“We controlled large parts of that game. We are limiting our errors and becoming tough, so I am really proud of the group,” said Flanagan.

“There are a lot of youngsters on that field at the end of the game. For them to show that composure, to get the three points we needed to get the win, I am super proud of the group.

“There are elements we can get better at and that excites me. “I never doubted the character, it was the composure in it to limit our errors and stick to script.

“I thought we played some fantastic rugby,” he added. “Ashton’s try was probably as good as you will see, multi=phase and multi-options and then popping up on the inside, he does that day in and day out at training.

“There is loads more in us and that is what excites me.

“Winning does help and that was important tonight, to come out to France is tough, especially for a young group, but we were superb.”

Dragons next face Emirates Lions at Rodney Parade on Sunday, January 22 (kick-off 1pm) and Flanagan admits the quest for knockout rugby is now within grasp.

“We want to prolong our season as much as we can. To do that you need to get into the playoffs in European rugby,” he said.

“We have Lions next week and we are not getting carried away. “It puts us closer to a home tie and we want to win every game of rugby we play.

“If we produce elements of what we did tonight it is going to make us hard to beat at home next week.”
