Rodney Parade to host Celtic Challenge opener

Rodney Parade will host the inaugural clash between Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder in the Celtic Challenge – as part of a huge New Year’s Day double-header of action at the home of Dragons RFC.

The WRU recently announced the latest investment and innovation for Women’s rugby with confirmation of two Welsh teams in the expanded Celtic Challenge this season.

Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder will now play in the cross-border competition– and they kick-off at Rodney Parade to launch 2024 in style.

The exciting news means fans who buy tickets to New Year’s Day rugby at Rodney Parade will get see two top class matches on the day.

  • Brython Thunder – who will wear red and black – and Gwalia Lightning – who will wear Blue and Yellow – will play at 2pm.
  • Dragons then tackle Scarlets in a highly-anticipated Welsh derby in the BKT United Rugby Championship at 5.15pm.

Graeme Bradbury, Interim CEO at Dragons RFC, said: “Everyone at Dragons RFC is delighted to be hosting the first-ever game between Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder in the Celtic Challenge at our home venue.

“It’s great news that we can both reinforce our support for women’s rugby and offer fans the chance to see a fantastic double-header of top-class rugby to kick-off 2024.”

John Alder, the WRU’s Head of Player Development, said: “Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder’s opening game in the new expanded Celtic Challenge being part of a Welsh derby double-header is a great way to mark this historic occasion.
