Over 1,200 enjoy camps with dragons community

Tilly Davies | 29/08/2023

Dragons RFC Community team have been busy working in clubs across our region over the last five weeks and delivered to over 1,270 children.

In partnership with Tata Steel, Sport Caerphilly and Centerprise International, the Community team hit the road to visit Beaufort RFC, Bargoed RFC, Blaenavon RFC, Monmouth RFC, Blackwood RFC and Abergavenny RFC and host skills camps, demonstrating the fun and enjoyment rugby brings - with some special guests along the way.

At our home we had one camp a week, welcoming children from the region to have a unique experience learning rugby and having fun while embracing the history of Rodney Parade.

Pro Camps – hosted at Ystrad Mynach - are a place for older players to come and get coached by our senior staff, allowing them an insight into what it takes to be a professional player at the Dragons.

Our first-ever Inclusion camp allowed members of our community to take part in rugby in a safe environment meeting their needs.

In total over 400 children attended a Dragons Skills Camps, in partnership with TATA Steel, Sport Caerphilly and Centerprise International.

WRU Fit Fed & Fun Camps are where we work with the WRU to support children across the UK who at risk of going hungry at the holidays.

We deliver rugby skills while fruit and veg for the morning and food for lunch is given to the children makes the day enjoyable and families know their child is being fed.

We worked with 870 children at to make sure they don’t go hungry over this summer.

Mike Sage, Community Manager at Dragons RFC, said: “It’s been a very busy and rewarding summer for our award-winning community team as we have worked with 1,278 children at various camps.

"A massive thanks to our staff, Tygan Pinch and Steve Lewis, for co-ordinating and leading a superb summer series of camps, supported by inclusion officers, Karen Burgess and Jac Benger, along with our community ambassadors.

“Our thanks also to our Dragons Community partners - Tata Steel, Sport Caerphilly and Centerprise International – for helping us deliver more Skills Camps than ever before during these school holidays.

“It’s been fantastic to support WRU Fit Fed & Fun Camps and help as many children as possible in our region.

“In total the team here have worked for an incredible 136 hours over five weeks and now preparations begin for our next camps in the autumn.”
