Ryan backing lock changes to shine

19/05/2022

Boss Dean Ryan has backed a new-look second row to produce in the end-of-season clash with Emirates Lions at Rodney Parade on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The Men of Gwent conclude the United Rugby Championship season with a home clash against Emirates Lions from South Africa – a first-ever clash between the teams.

Ryan has confirmed Dragons will go into the game without injured duo Will Rowlands and Ben Carter while Joe Davies will be suspended after his red card against Cardiff Rugby.

However, the Director of Dragons Rugby has backed those who fill the lock roles to rise to the challenge as the curtain falls on the season.

"It’s a huge challenge facing a South African side this weekend. We look forward to those who come in taking an opportunity to show what they can do,” said Ryan.

“Losing Will and Ben has been a tough challenge and losing Joe after last week too.

“We’ve lost the three frontline players for us, the most regular starters, but I can’t speak highly enough of Huw (Taylor) for the way he adapted last week against Cardiff.

“This is another opportunity for him to put a marker down about his role as a second row.

“Joe Maksymiw has played plenty of rugby for us and we know what he can produce while Max Williams is back from injury so he will get an opportunity. We’re looking forward to seeing how they perform."

Meanwhile, Ryan has also confirmed Wales international prop Leon Brown will also miss the game as he recovers from a nerve issue in his neck.
