Dragons inclusion festival at Principality

27/04/2022

Forty schools and over 400 schoolchildren from the Tony Brown Gateway Rugby project at Dragons will get to play at Principality Stadium this week as part of a huge inclusion festival.

The Principality Stadium is in the middle of its busiest nine days of the year with players battling it out for 28 different titles as part of the WRU’s Road to the Principality Finals Day.

There is something for everyone across nine days of competition - and one of the highlights is ‘Inclusion Day’ this Friday (April 29) when schools that take part in the Gateway Rugby Project in our region take centre stage.

Mike Sage, Community Manager at Dragons, revealed how pupils from Years 5 and 6 who take part in the primary school provision have been invited to the capital for a special day.

“We always hold an annual festival and it’s fantastic that so many of the Gateway Rugby schools from across our region will this year get the chance to play at Principality Stadium,” he said.

“Hundreds of schoolchildren will make memories for life during the tag festival and undoubtedly be inspired by the incredibly surroundings.

“Our thanks go to Carl Scales, WRU Rugby Development Apprenticeship Manager, for his support in making this special day a reality.

“Also to the Dragons Community staff and coaches, plus the WRU apprentices, who will be working hard to run the tournament and make sure every child has a day they will never forget.”

The Tony Brown Gateway Rugby project see Dragons Community staff visit primary schools every fortnight, building a great rapport with the schools, staff and pupils to make maximum impact.

The team deliver a number of generic sporting skills, team building activities and small sided games during hour-long sessions.

The aim is for the pupils to become more skilful, learn important life skills through sport and ultimately enjoy the experience whilst looking after their health and wellbeing.

We are currently working with Primary schools from all around the region with huge success, and would welcome more schools into our #GatewayRugbyFamily to enjoy the many inspiring opportunities.
