Hewitt joins Team Wales as Director

21/12/2021

Wing Ashton Hewitt will be helping lead Team Wales into the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after this week being announced as a new Non-Executive Director.

Hewitt, currently on the comeback trail from a knee injury, is one of two new appointments who will help strategically lead the organisation in its decision making.

He is joined by Anna Stembridge the former two-time Commonwealth Games and World Cup international Welsh netball athlete, and a former England squad coach.

Alongside his rugby career, Hewitt has completed a degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Youth Justice, followed by a Masters in Human Resource Management.

Having competed in a range of sports before his rugby career, Hewitt has a keen interest in a wide range of sports which he hopes to translate into his contributions to Team Wales.

With a passion for equality and fairness, Hewitt said he was looking forward to being involved with the Commonwealth Games Wales team to achieve success at the 2022 games.

"I am delighted to have been appointed and have the opportunity to be part of Commonwealth games Wales,” he said.

“It’s a new experience for me, which leaves me excited to get started and contribute as best I can to the team and build on its legacy moving forward.”

Helen M Phillips, Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales, said: “The board has been overwhelmed by the level of interest in the Non-Executive Director role applications. I am very pleased to welcome Anna and Ashton to the Commonwealth Games Wales Board.

“They both bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise from both an athlete’s perspective, in their professional work capacity and life experiences.

“We felt it’s the right time to bring in new board members alongside a very experience board as part of our long-established succession strategy. Their passion to drive forward sport in Wales will be invaluable to us.

“It’s paramount we as a board continue to develop, innovate, and create a positive impact on sport in Wales, and Anna and Ashton will certainly bring a great deal of independent, creative, and diverse level of thinking and understanding to the organisation.”
