Ultimate XV: Blindside Flanker

06/04/2020

The battle for the back row starts NOW! It’s sure to generate lots of debate and lots of votes – and we start at blindside flanker in our Ultimate XV feature – in association with doopoll.

The votes were cast for our front five last week with Rod Snow, Elliot Dee, Rhys Thomas, Luke Charteris and Ian Gough selected!

This week we pick the back row and our half back! It’s going to be a fierce contest!

Today we have selected five players to pick for the six shirt – and just wait until to you see the Openside and Number Eight selection!

Remember, if you think someone else is deserving you can nominate them too! Just comment when you vote! Everyone who signs up and votes will be entered into a prize draw for a Dragons jersey.

Which of these first five nominations gets your vote:

Aaron Wainwright (2003-2008): 48 appearances

Back row Aaron Wainwright has enjoyed a meteoric rise with Dragons since making his debut in October 2017 against Cardiff Blues. Having previously played for Newport and part of the Dragons Academy set-up, Wainwright won an international call-up for the summer tour of 2018 to USA and Argentina. Wainwright was also part of the Wales plans during the 2018 autumn internationals and 2019 Six Nations before being named in the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad.

Lewis Evans (2014 to 2019): 232 appearances

Record-appearance maker Lewis Evans made his 200th appearance for Dragons in 2017, running out in front of a home crowd against Ulster in the Guinness PRO14. Newport-born Evans began his rugby by playing throughout the Dragons age-grades and also played for Premiership sides Ebbw Vale and Newport. Evans has been a crucial part of the Dragons squad since 2008 and has also impressed at an international level, representing Wales at all age group levels and Wales Sevens.

Colin Charvis (2006-2009): 51 appearances

Former Wales international Charvis arrived at Rodney Parade in 2006 – after spells at Swansea, Tarbes and Newcastle - and clocked up over half a century of appearances for the region. Former Wales captain Charvis also made 96 Test appearances and represented the British & Irish Lions in 2001.

Dan Lydiate (2006-2013): 85 appearances

A gritty worker at the breakdown and towering tackler, Wales flanker Lydiate quickly developed into an international back-row of note after recovering from a career-threatening neck injury at Dragons. A Wales cap at U20 level, he finally graduated to the international arena in 2009. His destructive tackling, huge workload and aggressive rucking make him a crowd favourite.

Gavin Thomas (2007-2014) 61 appearances

The 24 times capped flanker brought a wealth of experience, having previously played for the Scarlets, Bath, Ospreys and Bridgend, when he arrived at Rodney Parade in 2009. A fantastic all-round player who was great in the contact area and his playmaking skills were second to none.
