Roach - Let's stay on the attack

18/09/2019

Captain Ben Roach has urged Dragons XV to keep playing and adopting an attacking style - despite coming out the wrong side of several tight Celtic Cup encounters.

The Dragons XV have played some scintillating rugby this campaign and thrilled the Rodney Parade crowd with a big bonus point victory over Munster A last month.

The team has also suffered two narrow one-score defeats to Connacht Eagles and Scarlets A and were edged out by Cardiff Blues A in the Welsh capital.

However, despite those trio of narrow losses, Roach believes the team must keep looking to go on the attack as they prepare to face Ulster A at Ystrad Mynach on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

“It wasn’t the result we wanted (against Scarlets), we always want to come out and win at Rodney Parade,” he said.

“I thought the intent to play a fast and attacking game was definitely there and the intensity was good, we have just come out the wrong side of a few results.

“There are things to learn, we will take them away and look to progress next week against Ulster.”

Roach believes the cup competition has been a huge boost for the region with youngsters and senior professionals all getting valuable game time.

“There are boys on the fringes of the first team and some first team coming down, so everyone is getting that exposure,” he said.

“It is a great standard of rugby and we can only progress from the Scarlets game.

“It is tough to take when you lose, there are always going to be these one-score games because of the calibre of the teams we are playing.

“It’s hard to say why we have come out the wrong side a few times. We’ve got things to work on, there were a few balls that went down, but we will learn from that.

“There are a lot of positives too and we will progress next week and look to move forward.

“This is the game we want to play,” he added. “We want to play it fast and we want to play it expansive with ball in hand. It’s now about bringing it all together.”

Adult entry for the Celtic Cup fixture at Ystrad Mynach on Saturday is £5 and Under-16s are FREE

Season Members are reminded that they will gain FREE access to ALL home games in the Celtic Cup by showing their membership card.
