DAVIES - MAKE STATEMENT AGAINST CLERMONT

Scrum half Rhodri Davies believes Dragons can make a real statement with a big performance against French giants ASM Clermont Auvergne on Friday night at Rodney Parade (kick-off 8pm).

Davies will hope to be involved once again after this double try burst helped defeat Timisoara Saracens 59-3 last week.

The 27-year-old is under no illusions to the size of the task ahead of Dragons has they face a Clermont side who have not lost in three months in all competitions.

However, the Crymych-born No.9 believes a big display can put out a real statement for what can be achieved in the rest of the season.

“We can take confidence from last week, but we know this week is a massive test. Everyone knows that,” he said.

“Clermont are top in Europe and the Top14 so it will be a good test for us. We are looking forward to it.

“I can’t wait to get into Friday,” he added. “You are playing against one of the best teams in Europe. It’s a great chance to express yourself and enjoy it.

“They could probably field three strong teams in Europe. Whatever team they send over, it is a big test. But it’s the chance to make a big statement.”

Davies made the move to Dragons from Rotherham in the close season and believes patience was rewarded with his first start of the season against the Romanians.

“I’ve been patient and so when I got my chance I really wanted to enjoy the whole experience and try and put a performance in,” he said.

“You’ve got two good scrum halves here in Rhods (Rhodri Williams) and Tav (Tavis Knoyle) so we are all trying to keep each other on their toes. It’s nice to have that competition.

“You’ve got to be patient, train hard and keep your head down. I’ve really enjoyed being at the Dragons. We have a tight knit group here,” he added.

“Last week we knew Timisoara were a weaker team so we were out to throw the ball around, keep the tempo high and keep the ball in play.

“The first half we struggled a bit, we tried to play a bit too expansive straight off.

“Second half they got tired and players like Jordan (Williams) and Hallam (Amos) were tearing them apart. Luckily I was on the end of a few things.”
