Moriarty will give us boost - Jackman

Head Coach Bernard Jackman believes the availability of Ross Moriarity will give his Dragons a boost this weekend – describing the back row as a ‘winner’ and ‘very driven’ to perform.

New recruit Moriarty missed the opening Guinness PRO14 game of the season through suspension.

However, the Wales international could now be called-up for the home clash with Isuzu Southern Kings on Saturday afternoon at Rodney Parade (kick-off 3pm).

“He’s obviously a marquee signing for us and he will come into the team,” said Jackman.

“Our back row of Ollie Griffiths, Aaron Wainwright and Lewis Evans were good against Benetton Rugby so we will need to look at it as we have a lot of competition in the back row.

“Ross will give us a boost. He is a winner and very driven. Sometimes one player coming in can be a catalyst for everyone calming down.

“We’re looking forward to having him involved. We’re disappointed by the first result and it’s a long season, but we have got to make sure we get it right quickly.”

The Kings arrive at Rodney Parade after a 32-16 defeat to Zebre on the opening weekend, but Jackman insists it is vital his Dragons focus on themselves and deal with expectation.

“We’ve got to deal the pressure,” added Jackman. “They say pressure is a privilege and we have to deal with it the right way and make sure it is a positive driver for us rather than a negative.

“That is something we’ll work with the senior player this week on and we know how important the game is and will use that in the right way.

“The players can see there is better players in the environment, they can see the team culture is good and they want to win to show everyone else. But that is not always how it works.

“Sometimes you have really difficult times before you find that key to winning. We have got to get it right next week.”
