Jones High Praise For Lock Star Evans

Forwards Coach Ceri Jones has praised the performances of Lewis Evans since he switched to the second row.

Evans – the leading appearance maker in the region’s history– has moved to lock in recent months and quickly settled into the new role for Dragons.

The 31-year-old also showed his continued impact around the field by making the most tackles in the last round of Guinness PRO14 action with 26 against Connacht.

“Lewis has done remarkably well to step up and call the lineout so smartly too. It is a new challenge for him and one he is relishing,” said Jones.

“He enjoys the analysis and the game of chess that the lineout is. If he can keep that going it will be huge for him and us.

“I’m not surprised with how he has settled in,” he added. “If you challenge Lewis, he finds a way to make it work.

“He has told me before he can do a better job than everyone else, so he is not short of confidence. He does his homework, knows what the opposition is going to do and has a plan in place.

“If the opposition change their defence he knows how to respond, has a second call to go to and that is massive.

“It’s not reactional with Lewis; he solves problems and the lineout is getting more and more like the NFL.

“You have a set defence and attack, it’s all moving parts and about knowing how to exploit that space – that is the modern day lineout.”

Dragons take on Russia at Bedwas RFC on Friday (16 November), kick off 7.30pm with tickets on sale from Bedwas RFC and Rodney Parade.
