Dragons Academy fullback Hallam Amos is set to make history as the youngest Welsh player to play regional rugby in any competition as he starts for the Dragons against Wasps on Saturday.

At 17 years and 28 days, Hallam will break the record set by the Ospreys’ Kristian Phillips in 2008.

Hallam is already a record holder as he became the youngest ever Premiership player as he came off the bench for Newport last weekend.

However, his title could be short-lived as Jack Dixon could make his regional debut off the bench on Saturday at just 16 years, 313 days.

Jonathan Evans was the youngest player ever to appear for the Dragons, coming off the bench against the Ospreys on in 2010 aged 17 years 286 days whilst he also holds the record as the youngest players to start for the region aged 18 years 165 days.

“This is not a decision that we have taken lightly,” said Dragons Director of Rugby Rob Beale. “Hallam’s selection is part of our ongoing policy of developing young talent which is crucial to our business going forward.

“It’s no coincidence that our previous youngest player was Jon Evans who is a part of the future here at the region. The emergence of players like Jon and Adam Hughes shows how important these opportunities are. I’m very excited for Hallam, Adams Park is a good place to go and get his first start.

“It’s testament to our Academy staff that players are ready to play senior rugby at a younger age and this game will enable a very talented young player to kick off his regional career.”
