Coleg Gwent season so far

A star so far

Coleg Gwent finished off their WRU Colleges league campaign with a victory against Swansea college 25 -20. This result established that Coleg Gwent finished top of the inaugural WRU Colleges League with a played 12 won 11 season.

Paul Young coach of the Coleg Gwent stated “ It has been a fantastic season so far, it goes to show that we are developing strength in depth, as we are still able to win fixtures while some of the boys are involved in representative matches. Though we are now through to the business end of the season we must remain focused to achieve our goals.”

The college now has two mouth watering fixtures on the horizon against Coleg Sir Gar. Firstly the Grand Final for the best two teams in the WRU Colleges Ym Laen League, which is to be played at Bridgend RFC on the 13th of April and secondly a semi final in the British Colleges’ Cup, which will lead to the crowning of the British College Champions.

William Thomas, the Dragons Performance Programme Manager stated ‘the Dragons have identified the Junior Academy, which is based at Coleg Gwent, and its players as key to underpinning the Senior Academy. Although the Academy is more structured towards individual development rather than results, it is always enjoyable to win, which we have been doing a lot of at this level this season. Hopefully the players and coaches can round the season off with strong showings at Rosslyn Park, the Welsh College Grand Final and then the British College competition before they head out on a three week tour to New Zealand and Honk Kong.’

While the college is preparing for these fixtures it is also sending a strong squad to the Rosslyn Park 7’s this week followed by the Urdd 7’s in the first week of April.
