DRAGONS BOOSTED BY SUPPORT FOR AFRICA TRIP

Thanks to the people of Gwent, Rhodri Gomer Davies and Richard Parks, along with members of our backroom staff will be taking over 100kg of donated kit for schoolchildren in Nairobi.

Newport Gwent Dragons would like to thank everyone who has donated kit for their trip to Kenya on Sunday. Thanks to the people of Gwent, Rhodri Gomer Davies and Richard Parks, along with members of our backroom staff will be taking over 100kg of donated kit for schoolchildren in Nairobi. Along with the 50 rugby balls, the team will be taking over 100 T-shirts, 50 pairs of shorts and boots and 200 Warburton’s tag belts along with whistles and trophies,

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had from the local community,” said Dragons Physio Dan Martin “This sportswear and equipment will make a real difference to hundreds of kids living in difficult conditions in Kenya, and yet again is an example of how strong and supportive the local rugby community is here.”

“We would like to thank everyone who donated kit, particularly Warburton’s, Glasllwch Junior School, Eveswell Junior School and Newport Junior Schools Rugby Union.”

The team will be visiting both Dagoretti High School and a local primary school for four days on the outskirts of Nairobi. At the primary school they will be helping with a building project to put a fence around the school, which will keep the children and the facilities safe.

In the afternoons, they will be going to Dagoretti High School to offer rugby coaching sessions for the local kids. Dagoretti High School on Waithaka-Kikuyu Road offers an opportunity for Nairobi’s brightest to reach their potential. Unfortunately, like most schools in Kenya, there are fees to be paid and with many children losing their parents to AIDS, their futures are often put on hold as they often have to leave school and face an uncertain future.

The purpose of the trip is threefold. Firstly to open links with rugby communities in less wealthy countries than our own, to serve the school community in Kenya through rugby and thirdly and most importantly, to try and make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged Kenyan youngsters.
