Dragons Amateur Team Secure a Win

On windy evening at Corus RFC The Dragons Amateur team set about completing the double over the improving Ospreys.

Straight from kick off The Dragons showed their intent by running the ball from deep in their half, David James (Blackwood) collected the bouncing ball and penetrated down the blindside, with a wall of players in front of him he chipped over their heads and gathered the ball which he then passed to Rob Smith (Blackwood) to race down the touch line to score, Jamie Howell (Bargoed) converted.

The Ospreys rallied well and scored in a try in the corner following a move which was created by the backs bringing the score to 5-7.

The Dragons continued to play the game at a high pace and both sides looked to run the ball at every opportunity. After some good driving play by The Dragons forwards they were awarded a lineout ten metres away from the Ospreys line. From the lineout Jamie Noble (Blaina) collected the throw in and the forwards drove towards the Ospreys line and Lee Edwards (Tredegar) was at the bottom of the resulting maul to clinch the touch down for a try which was unconverted.

The swirling wind affected the Ospreys team with players finding it difficult to pass the ball. The Dragons capitalised on their mistakes and provided them with ball from their powerful scrum. Play continued up the right hand side of the pitch with The Dragons driving the Ospreys back with their forward dominance. This allowed The Dragons to set up a maul and from fifteen metres away drove towards The Ospreys try line with Lee Edwards claiming his second. The try was unconverted bringing the score to 5-17.

With ten minutes left of the first half the Ospreys gathered some momentum and created numerous opportunities which produced two tries bringing the score to 19-17 at half time.

The second half started with the wind at The Dragons back which proved to be more difficult than anticipated. The Ospreys defended for most of the half stopping the Dragons from scoring on a lot of occasions. With ten minute to go a blind side attack led by Lee Edwards following good work by the powerful Dragons scrum, Edwards made good ground before passing to Lee Pearson (Bargoed) who drew the fullback and put Jamie Howells (Bargoed) into score. The try was unconverted.

Again this was a gutsy performance from The Dragons with the pack having the upper hand throughout the game.

Final Score 17-22 to The Dragons
