Dragons scrum half Gareth Cooper has been ruled out for the rest of the season following a dislocated shoulder sustained in Wales’ Six Nations match against England. We caught up with him to see what the prognosis is on his injury.

How exactly did you sustain the injury?

I made a tackle on one of the England players and I got back to my feet and was trying to steal the ball but got hit awkwardly and dislocated my shoulder as a consequence.

What is the schedule for the road to recovery?

I am currently waiting for the swelling to go down and then have to have an operation which should be at the end of this month if things go well. I will then start on rehab and hope to be back for the start of next season.

What will you do now for the rest of the season?

Be a huge supporter of The Dragons! I will look to keep myself in good shape and aim to come back fitter, stronger and faster for the start of next season.

What do you miss most when you are not playing?

Being injured is a difficult time for any sports person and you naturally feel left out of it and you are just dying to get back out on the sports field, I am no different.

How do you keep your spirits high when you are injured?

It is difficult but I am trying to look at the positives, it is a chance to rest my ankle which has been pretty sore and it gives me the opportunity to get 100% fit and come back better than last season.

What is life like in the Welsh camp? Who do you get along best with?

I get on well with everybody, it is a good camp to be involved with and everyone gets on well. Tom Shanklin is a bit of a joker and likes to play jokes on everyone; however, he doesn’t like the jokes being played on him!

Which players do you think will make an impact in the Six Nations this year? Who do you think will win it?

Obviously Dwayne Peel and Stephen Jones are the main men at the moment and are performing well. If Wales win in Ireland next weekend then there is no reason why they cannot go onto win the Six Nations again this year.

What tips would you pass onto aspiring rugby players?

Just to watch as much rugby as possible and try to pick up tips from watching the game. Also train hard!
