Benetton Treviso v Dragons Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons lost to a much improved Treviso team in Italy this evening 27 -11.

The Dragons failed to capitalise on early pressure when Treviso managed to spoil the ball at a Dragons ruck deep in their twenty two following a 60m break from Adam warren and when Treviso were penalised from a driving lineout in their own 22, Angus O’Brien pushed his penalty attempt wide.

Treviso then went on the attack and were rewarded with a penalty in front of the post when Nic Cudd was penalised at the ruck (3- 0 to Treviso).

After 27 minutes, Treviso scored a controversial try when, following a driving line out, Tommaso Allen put a grubber kick through under the posts and referee John Lacey awarded the score despite Tyler Morgan’s protestations that he had grounded the ball. Without the benefit of a TMO the try was awarded and was converted by Allen (10 -0).

Immediately from the restart, Treviso cleared the ball to Carl Meyer on the halfway line, who carried the ball back hard to break the line, from the ensuing ruck Rynard  Landman went down the blindside and offloaded to Charlie Davies. From the ruck Adam Warren played 9 and popped the ball to Rynard Landman who crossed FOR a well constructed score. Angus O’ Brien was wide with the conversion.  (10 -5)  The Dragons continued to attack and following a lineout steal from Cory Hill just before half time, they were awarded a Penalty inside the Treviso 22 which AOB converted.

Half Time Score 10 – 8

The dragons made two changes at half-time with Rynard Landman (Calf) being replaced by Mathew Screech and Craig Mitchel replacing Lloyd Fairbrother.

Immediately from the Kick off, the Dragons failed to exit effectively which resulted in a line out just outside the 22. Treviso drove the line out and whilst the Dragons stopped the drive Treviso broke down the blindside and after a series of pick and goes forced their way over in the corner  Tommaso Allen converting form the left touchline. 17-8.

There followed a period of stalemate with neither side creating any opportunities which was broken when Hallam Amos was penalised for a challenge in the air from a box kick from Charlie Davies.Treviso kicked to the corner and drove the line out. The Dragons defended the lineout well but were penalised for not rolling away  at the ruck and once again,  Allen was successful with a penalty kick.

There followed a period of pressure from the Dragons, but two unforced errors within 10m of the opposition try line cost them dear and they failed to regain a foothold in the game there after. A couple of poor exits from Treviso kicks resulted in further pressure and despite some dogged defence, the Dragons conceded  another touchdown late in the game, converted Allen.
