Leading the charge for War Child

12/01/2021

What if all the ground we covered added up to something life-changing? A team from Dragons Rugby are doing just that for War Child UK.

War Child UK has this month launched the Peace Band Challenge encouraging the public to go the distance – or 24,901 miles to be exact, all the way around the world – to help raise vital funds for their essential work supporting children living in conflict zones.

People pledging their support will be running, jumping, wheeling, skipping and playing team sports to raise funds for War Child UK.

Among them is Ben Stirling, Head of Physiotherapy & Medical Services at Dragons, who has formed The Welsh Wanderers – a team of ex-players, current coaching and performance staff at Dragons who are hoping to make a difference.

Gordon Ross, Barry Maddocks, Rhodri West, James Chapron, Dan Baugh, Luke Narraway, Matt O’Brien and Aled Rees are among those now going the distance for children affected by war.

You can visit The Welsh Wanderers fundraising page HERE - all donations made until February 18, 2021 will be doubled by the UK government, as part of Aid Match funding for War Child’s Torn From Home appeal.

Aid matched funds raised from the Peace Band Challenge will be used to increase access to education and business skills training for children, as well as help parents and caregivers to find local sustainable work to help keep families together:

  • £5 - A textbook for a child attending community-based learning programme
  • £20 - School kit, including stationary, for a month to help a child return to education
  • £40 - A classroom kit for a teacher (chalk, blackboard etc.) for a class of 35
  • £175 - Business skill toolkits for parents
  • £1000 - Costs to set up one child friendly multipurpose centre
  • £2500 - Would provide 500 textbooks for children at risk of migration

Want to get involved yourself? Walk, wheel, run, climb, skip, or take on a sporting challenge – however you want to get your steps in, it all counts!

Go it alone or gather friends, family or colleagues and take on the challenge together.

Simply sign up and create your fundraising page and share with people you know who might like to sponsor you.

Make your steps count for children living through conflict.
