Dragons Amateur Team lose by a point

The Dragons Amateur team lost by a single point to the Scarlets last Tuesday night

Kath McCarthy | 23/02/2006

After another long journey in the space of two weeks The Dragons played the Scarlets at Tenby RFC.

The team for the game had Lewis Weyman making is debut at No8, and after only five minute into the game The Dragons had a lineout five metres away from their own line which the Scarlets pressurised and stole the ball to crash over with their flanker scoring, which was converted by their outside half.

The Dragons started to make head way into the Scarlets half with some good strong running by both centres Darren Humphries (Bargoed) and Shaun Powell (Penallta.) The territory gained by their runs provided dividends with The Dragons being awarded two first half penalties making the score seven points to six at the interval.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first half with the Scarlets scoring early in the half under the posts which was converted. Again The Dragons replied with some good runs by the forwards but these proved fruitless with some silly penalties given away. The pack had the upper hand but were penalised by the referee on a few occasions for boring in.

With ten minutes left to play The Dragons made some changes with Phil Price (Caerphilly) replacing Shaun Powell of Penallta in the centre. The forwards started to drive into the Scarlets twenty two which produced quick ball for the backs to run, hitting the line hard with pace and Price handed off two tacklers to score under the posts to bring the score to fourteen points to thirteen with minutes to go.

The Dragons continued to pressurise the Scarlets only to be beaten by the clock, final score 14-13 to the Scarlets, again the boys showed great determination but where undone by an improved Scarlets team.

The next game for the Dragons will be on the 14th of March away to the Ospreys, venue to be confirmed.
