Lloyd made his debut for the Dragons when he came off the bench in the Anglo-Welsh Cup game against Newcastle Falcons in 2008.

Lloyd made a name for himself in the hooker position, however he originally began his rugby career playing as a number eight. He came to the Dragons through Principality Premiership sides Pontypool RFC and Cross Keys RFC.

During the 2009/2010 season, Lloyd again played a bit part for the Dragons, coming off the bench 4 times for the region towards the latter part of the season.

It wasn’t until the 2010/2011 season when Lloyd Burns became a permanent fixture in the Dragons matchday 22 and in the second half of the season began to establish himself as the first choice hooker.

His impressive performances drew the attention of Wales coach Warren Gatland and Lloyd earned his first Wales cap in the international against the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium on the 4th June 2011. Since he held a dual contract with both the Dragons and Cross Keys he was also the first Cross Keys player to be capped since 1956.

Shortly afterwards he was named in Wales’ preliminary 45 man squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Lloyd came off the bench in the World Cup warm up game against England at Twickenham and made his first International start in the return match at the Millennium Stadium the following week

Burns was named in the final 30 man squad to travel to New Zealand for RWC 2011. He started the Pool game against Namibia and came off the bench in the matches against Samoa, Fiji and the Bronze Medal loss against Australia. Lloyd scored his first International try in New Zealand in the 66-0 rout of Fiji in the final Pool game.

Lloyd Burns was forced to retire from rugby in April 2012, following a neck injury that had seen the hooker out of action since the beginning of January. Ongoing tests had revealed damage to the aorta which necessitated immediate retirement, with possible heart surgery to follow.
