Profile

Bridgend born Matthew Jones made his professional debut for the Ospreys as a replacement against the Scarlets in January 2004. It was his only appearance for the region that season however he went on to be a more regular figure in the Ospreys squad in the 2004/2005 season, making 23 appearances in the Celtic League and Heineken Cup, racking up 90 points (including 2 tries against Harlequins and Ulster). Jones also played the full 80 minutes and contributed 19 points in the Ospreys November meeting with the Dragons that year.

In the summer of 2005, then Wales Head Coach Mike Ruddock selected Jones for the summer tour of North America. He won his solitary Welsh cap as a replacement in the 60-3 win over Canada.

In the 2007/2008 season, Matthew Jones found himself behind James Hook and Shaun Connor in the Ospreys fly half pecking order and went out on a 6 month loan to English Championship side Moseley. Despite being in all of Moseley’s matchday squads for the first half of the season, Jones opted to rejoin Bridgend in November of 2007, bringing him back into Ospreys regional contention, however he failed to make any further appearances for the region.

In 2008, Mike Ruddock brought Matthew to Worcester Warriors where he made 16 appearances in his first season at the club, breaking the 100 point barrier for the 2008/2009 season.

2009/2010 saw Jones used more sparingly in the starting line-up and instead more frequently as a substitute from the bench (11 times in his 15 appearances).

When his contract ended at Worcester he returned to Wales to join the Newport Gwent Dragons. He made 26 appearances, sharing fly half duties with Jason Tovey, and accumulated 127 points in the process.

In January 2012 Matthew was released by the region early to take up an opportunity to play rugby with Bristol.
