Rob Appleyard joined the Dragons part-time in February 2011 whilst retaining his responsibilities as Welsh Under 20s National Skills Coach.

He joined the region on a full-time basis in May 2011 and stepped back from the Under 20s setup to concentrate on regional rugby.

Rob played for Swansea, Sale Sharks and Cardiff Blues whilst also picking up 9 caps for Wales and being selected for the Barbarians.

A Level 4 Coach, Rob started his career at the Ospreys before moving in to the academy system at the Scarlets where he spent six years, including a period as Skills Coach for the senior side. Rob has also been Head Coach of Llandovery RFC and Forwards Coach of Llanelli RFC.

Whilst with the Welsh Under 20s, Rob helped take Wales to fourth place in the 2008 Junior World Cup and coached the Under 20s in the 2010/11 season.

Apps is renowned for having brought the notorious Tackle Dungeon to Rodney Parade. He is also a keen statistician and spends a lot of time analysing performances as individuals and as a team.

Rob’s Credo is “To intimidate the opposition with noise and physicality.”

In his spare time, Rob likes to play guitar and is believed by some to be quite good.
