Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons began their pre-season preparations with a stunning win of 38-28 over closest rivals Cardiff Blues.

The pre-season friendly, saw fans enjoy a beneficiary game that was awarded to current Captain Lewis Evans and former player Ashley Smith for their long service to the Region.

It was newcomer Nick Macleod who opened up the Dragons account when he kicked a successful penalty kick. He then went on to convert four tries in the first 30 minutes, seeing the Dragons take a 31-0 lead.

The first try came from Rynard Landman who crossed the line in superb fashion. Not long after it was hooker Elliot Dee who went over from a driving line-out.

The third try saw Adam Hughes intercept a pass and sprint to the whitewash whilst the fourth was claimed by flanker Nic Cudd after some pressure from the home side.

Before the first half was over the Cardiff Blues made it over for their first try of the night, which was scored by scrum-half Lewis Jones with Jarrod Evans converting.

It was the Dragons who scored the first try in the second half as Thomas Rhys Thomas scored a close range try, after coming on for an injured Elliot Dee. But it was Carl Meyer who slotted over the conversion to extend the Dragons lead to 38-7.

Cardiff Blues responded to the Dragons as replacement Steve Shingler crossed in the corner and converted his own try. The opposition weren’t finished there as Josh Navidi spotted a gap in the Dragons defence and went over for their third try of the evening, Shingler once again converting the try.

As the game opened up in the final 15minutes of the game it was Cardiff Blues fullback Dan Fish who had the last word, as he collected the ball from a kick from Shingler to dive over, with Shingler once again converting.
